Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Religious media, which includes radio, television, and print media, plays a significant role in shaping public attitudes and behaviors, especially in a multi-faith society like Nigeria. Gwaram LGA in Jigawa State is home to diverse religious communities, and interfaith harmony is crucial for social cohesion and peace. Advertising through religious media channels can be a powerful tool for promoting understanding and tolerance between different religious groups. According to Ibrahim and Okafor (2024), religious media can use advertising to highlight shared values, encourage dialogue, and reduce misconceptions. This study explores the role of religious media in advertising for interfaith harmony in Gwaram LGA, examining the strategies used and their impact on fostering peaceful coexistence.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Religious tensions and misunderstandings between different faith communities persist in many parts of Nigeria, including Gwaram LGA. While religious media has been used for various purposes, its role in promoting interfaith harmony through advertising remains under-explored. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of religious media advertising in fostering interfaith harmony in Gwaram LGA, identifying the strategies that can help build mutual understanding and reduce religious conflict.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

1. Advertising in religious media significantly promotes interfaith harmony in Gwaram LGA.

2. Religious media advertising that focuses on shared religious values is more effective in fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding in Gwaram LGA.

3. Advertising campaigns in religious media contribute to a reduction in religious tensions and conflicts in Gwaram LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide insights into how religious media can be used as a tool for promoting interfaith harmony, offering valuable information for religious leaders, media practitioners, and policymakers. The findings will contribute to peace-building efforts and social cohesion in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of religious media in advertising for interfaith harmony in Gwaram LGA, Jigawa State. It does not extend to other regions or forms of interfaith dialogue.
